Trauma is something that many people face from all sorts of sources and experiences.
Some of the types of trauma people experience include:
- The death of a loved one
- Severe illness or injury
- Domestic violence
- Rape
- Natural disasters
- Witnessing an act of violence
For our family, it came while serving on the mission field and in the form of an attempted armed abduction of our children. After this most dreadful day of our lives, we wondered if we could ever again find peace.
After years of serving as Christian missionaries, we learned to adapt to a new environment. One afternoon while going for a customary outing in a van, a group of men approached our parked vehicle and at gunpoint insisted that he was going to take over the vehicle and take our children with him. The next set of events served to not only threaten our lives in the moment, but to shut down something in our hearts for months to come.
A crippling fear was the result of the trauma our family faced that day. It often kept us from going out of the house or to public settings. The images in our minds were overwhelming. We know we needed help and God led us to Emerge Counseling in search of it.
